The civil engineer knows which cutting force to expect and must now calculate the right anchoring. Johannes Braun’s office may be in the tranquil Black Forest, but his work takes him around the world. “fischer has 42 subsidiaries worldwide and we have importers who bring our product to market in an additional 80 countries”, he reports. “I travel to all these locations in order to give colleagues on-site support”. Lately his business trips often take him to the growth market in Asia. At the end of August he was at an engineering symposium in Jakarta, for instance, where he spoke about the country-specific difference in calculating anchors under seismic effect. He then travelled on to Bangkok in order to discuss a new project with an engineering firm.

Structural analysis verification is required in order to prevent an anchor from failing, for instance by breaking out of concrete. “Back in the 1980s you could simply do these calculations using the rule of three on a sheet of DIN A4 paper”, Braun recalls. “But civil engineering and anchor technology have since developed at such a speed that nobody wants to do these calculations by hand any more”. Users can start calculating their projects immediately upon downloading the software. “It is very intuitive to use and the number of registered users is steadily increasing”, Braun is pleased to say. “Since the software’s introduction in 2014 we have barely had to make any adjustments. Overall, fischer FIXPERIENCE comprises engineering software as well as seven specific application modules. They cover a broad field of applications for structural engineers, metalworkers, carpenters and many more (see box). “The C-Fix module for measuring steel and bonded anchors in concrete and masonry is of interest to construction engineers, for instance”, Braun says. “The programme allows users to model the anchor plate as desired and place the steel construction profile on top before entering the applicable loads. The next step allows the user to select the desired anchor”. In the best case the programme confirms a valid calculation before generating a verifiable hard copy. Alternatively, the programme can carry out multiple calculations by calculating the corresponding products and indicating which ones will work. “Those who urgently want to use a certain product can also use an optimisation function”, Braun explains. The programme then determines the size and shape of the anchor plate with the aim of generating a valid result.

Since early 2019 there has at least been a uniform design standard for Europe under DIN EN 1992-4. But there are parameters that are defined nationally in addition to various units of measurement, for instance in Germany and Great Britain.
